GDPR Compliance

The GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is a European Union regulation. Its main objective is to give their citizens and residents control and awareness over their personal data which collects during the browsing. The regulation stipulates the responsibilities of organisations with respects to storage, processing and transfer of personal data. GDPR is applicable to all entities that stores the personal data of European Union citizens and residents regardless of the location of its operation. GDPR requires that citizens explicitly give clear consent to storage and process their data, that system is designed to support privacy, and that access to personal data is minimised and limited to those needing to perform the processing.
This means that GDPR is applicable to virtually every scholarly publisher. GDPR identifies a “Data Controller” and a “Data Processor”. The Data Controller is the entity that determines the purposes, conditions, and means of processing personal data, in respect to scholarly publishing, this would be the editorial management team. The Data Processor processes personal data on behalf of the Data Controller- typically, the publisher/journal/conference/press manager in combination with system administrators and service providers are the Data Processor.
